The Course
Overview
TPC Summerlin is a private PGA TOUR-owned club and the longtime home of the Shriners Children's Open. The par-72, 7,243-yard course (74.3 rating / 139 slope) was carved from rugged desert terrain by architect Bobby Weed with player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller, and is conditioned to tour-quality standards.
History
Course history
TPC Summerlin opened in 1991, designed by then-PGA TOUR staff architect Bobby Weed with player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller. It has hosted a PGA TOUR event every year since, now the Shriners Children's Open, and famously was the site of Tiger Woods' first PGA TOUR victory in 1996.
Design
Design philosophy
Weed routed the course through rugged Summerlin desert, building strategic diversity through sophisticated green complexes, strategic bunkering and elevation change rather than relying solely on length. The result rewards intelligent course management and shot-making over raw power — a hallmark of TPC-standard design.
The Round
The course journey
I.
The Opening
The opening holes establish character through strategy rather than length, asking for accurate positioning off the tee. Weed eases players into the round before the desert terrain and tour-grade green complexes raise the demands.
II.
The Middle
Through the middle the reachable par 5s present clear risk-reward decisions, where the math often favors a three-shot approach over forcing the green. Strategic bunkering and elevation change keep the test sharp for every level of player.
III.
The Finish
The finishing sequence, holes 15 through 18, is where TPC Summerlin separates competent play from championship rounds. From the 7,243-yard tips, the close demands both nerve and precision under pressure.
How to Play It
Playing strategy by skill
Beginner / High Handicap
Play a forward set and treat TPC Summerlin as a positioning test — keep the ball in the fairway and respect the desert edges. The reachable par 5s are best played as three-shotters; aim to avoid the strategic bunkering rather than carry it.
Intermediate / Mid Handicap
Plan your way around the green complexes, choosing angles that leave uphill putts and avoid short-siding into the bunkers. On the par 5s, weigh the risk honestly — laying back to a full wedge often scores better than gambling.
Advanced / Low Handicap
At 74.3/139 on tour-grade conditioning, TPC Summerlin rewards precise tee-ball placement and confident long-iron and wedge play into firm, contoured greens. Take on the reachable par 5s only when the lie and line are right, and save your best golf for the demanding 15-18 finish.
