The Course

Overview

Serket — formerly Rio Secco Golf Club — is the Rees Jones championship course in Henderson's Seven Hills, reborn in 2025 under Cabot's ownership with a new identity drawn from Serket, the Egyptian goddess of protection, strength and healing, marked by a striking scorpion emblem. The course itself is unchanged: the same dramatic Rees Jones layout that has challenged players since 1997, routed through desert canyons and arroyos with bold elevation changes and strategic bunkering. Now open for public play, it remains one of the Las Vegas Valley's most respected championship tests.

Design

Design philosophy

Jones designed Rio Secco with championship standards in mind. Water features prominently, strategic bunkering creates width questions, and the length demands powerful, accurate golf. The greens are complex and frequently defended by hazards. The course doesn't offer shortcuts for any type of golfer.

The Round

The course journey

I.

The Opening

The opening nine establishes the course's demanding character immediately. Water is introduced early and frequently. The fairways offer width but bunkering is strategic. The challenge builds through the front nine, setting expectations for a serious test.

II.

The Middle

The back nine escalates the challenge. Water features become more aggressive. Greens are more complex. The course plays its longest and most demanding through holes 12-16, where back-to-back par-5s and challenging par-4s separate skilled players from the rest.

III.

The Finish

The closing three holes offer memorable finishes. The 17th is a dramatic par-4 over water. The 18th is a powerful closing hole that demands respect.

How to Play It

Playing strategy by skill

Beginner / High Handicap

Rio Secco is genuinely difficult for high handicaps. The yardage is considerable, water hazards are prominent, and the greens are complex. Conservative play is appropriate. Understanding your distances and avoiding water is critical to success.

Intermediate / Mid Handicap

Mid-handicap golfers should respect the length and water hazards. Accurate tee shots are more important than distance. Strategic lay-ups are sometimes appropriate on par-5s to avoid water hazards. Approach shots should be guided by green complex positioning.

Advanced / Low Handicap

Elite golfers recognize this as a championship test. Strategic aggression is possible but must be calculated. The water hazards offer risk-reward scenarios. The bunkering is sophisticated and rewards accurate positioning. Scoring here separates skilled players.
