The Course

Overview

Las Vegas Golf Club represents the historical anchor of Las Vegas golf — a course that predates the modern resort-golf era and maintains the character of authentic golf club operations in the desert environment.

History

Course history

Las Vegas Golf Club is the oldest course in the valley, designed in 1938 by celebrated architect William P. Bell — the same designer behind Torrey Pines and Riviera Country Club. Now operated by Arcis Golf, the historic muni recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that refreshed the clubhouse and course while preserving its classic, walkable character.

Design

Design philosophy

Bell's classic-era routing predates Las Vegas' theatrical desert-golf movement, relying on mature cottonwoods and pines, doglegs and traditional bunkering rather than manufactured drama. The result is a strategic, walkable parkland-style layout where shot placement and angles matter more than forced carries.

The Round

The course journey

I.

The Opening

The round opens through wide, tree-lined fairways that reward a confident, rhythmic start. Bell's classic design eases players in, using doglegs and mature timber rather than desert hazard to frame the early holes.

II.

The Middle

The middle holes show the course's strategic diversity, with doglegs and well-placed bunkering asking for thoughtful positioning off the tee. Water features and the valley's oldest stands of cottonwood add both challenge and character.

III.

The Finish

The closing stretch plays to the course's traditional strengths, rewarding patient, well-placed golf over raw power. At a modest 6,319 yards it stays fair, but the angles and trees demand respect to the finish.

How to Play It

Playing strategy by skill

Beginner / High Handicap

This is one of the friendliest tests in the valley — pick a comfortable tee, keep the ball under the tree line, and enjoy a walkable, classic layout. There are no forced desert carries, so steady contact will be rewarded.

Intermediate / Mid Handicap

Use the doglegs to your advantage by shaping tee balls into the corners and leaving full-swing approaches. The mature trees and traditional bunkering reward players who think a shot ahead rather than simply firing at flags.

Advanced / Low Handicap

At 69.8/121 the challenge is precision rather than length: work the ball off the doglegs, control spin into Bell's classic green complexes, and convert the scoring chances a shorter layout offers. Course management, not power, separates the low rounds here.
