The Course
Overview
Bali Hai is desert golf reimagined as a tropical escape. More than 4,000 trees — over 2,500 of them palms — frame the fairways, punctuated by white-sand Augusta-style bunkers, black volcanic-rock outcrops, and roughly seven acres of water hazards and lagoons. At 7,002 yards, par 71 (73.0 rating / 130 slope), it plays as a genuine championship test while delivering one of the most photographed settings in Las Vegas golf — all without leaving the Strip.
History
Course history
Bali Hai Golf Club opened in 2000 as the only championship golf course set directly on the Las Vegas Strip, occupying the land immediately south of Mandalay Bay. Designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley of Schmidt-Curley Design, the course was built around a South Pacific island theme — its name borrowed from the mythical island of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical South Pacific.
Design
Design philosophy
Schmidt and Curley used dense tropical landscaping and water as the course's defining strategic and visual language. Lagoons and palm stands separate the holes into distinct, framed compositions, and the bold bright bunkering plays off the dark volcanic rock for dramatic contrast.
The Round
Strategic layout
The routing builds toward its signature moment at the par-3 16th — an island green visible from the clubhouse, framed by blue water, palms, and tropical planting. Water is a recurring strategic factor throughout, rewarding committed, well-shaped iron play over caution.
