The Course

Overview

Spanish Trail Country Club represents private championship desert golf in Southern Nevada — a course that delivers legitimate challenge and quality conditioning at 6,871 yards from championship tees.

History

Course history

Spanish Trail Country Club opened in 1984 as one of the Las Vegas valley's pioneering private golf communities, with 27 holes designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The Sunrise, Lakes and Canyon nines combine into three distinct 18-hole routings, and the club has long been a fixture of upscale private golf in the southwest valley.

Design

Design philosophy

Spanish Trail reflects desert design principles that have evolved over decades of Southern Nevada golf. The course flows with the natural terrain, utilizing elevation changes and desert vegetation.

The Round

The course journey

I.

The Opening

Each Spanish Trail combination opens across mature, tree-lined parkland terrain that has matured over four decades. Jones eases members in with playable corridors before the water and bunkering of the stronger nines take hold.

II.

The Middle

The middle holes — particularly across the Lakes nine — bring water decisively into play, demanding precise positioning and confident club selection. The 27-hole variety means the strategic test shifts depending on the day's routing.

III.

The Finish

The closing holes of the Canyon/Lakes routing play to a stout 74.4/144, with water and length combining for a demanding finish. Patience and course management close the round more reliably than aggression.

How to Play It

Playing strategy by skill

Beginner / High Handicap

From the forward tees Spanish Trail is a mature, walkable parkland test — keep the ball in the wide corridors and away from the lakes. Let the generous landing areas and the absence of desert forced-carries build confidence.

Intermediate / Mid Handicap

Know which nine you're playing and plan around the water on the Lakes holes, choosing safe sides into the well-bunkered greens. Jones' routing rewards players who position rather than overpower.

Advanced / Low Handicap

At 74.4/144 from the championship tees the Canyon/Lakes combination is a genuine test: control trajectory over water, work the ball into the green angles, and respect the bunkering. The high slope reflects how quickly a loose shot turns into trouble.
