The Course
Overview
Stallion Mountain plays as a single par-72 of 7,120 yards (74.8 / 134) on the east side of the valley, about seven miles from the Strip. Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley rebuilt the property in 2004 — tiered fairways, deep bunkering and six lakes threaded through what had been a sprawling 54-hole country club. A 38,000-square-foot clubhouse and a 16-acre practice park anchor the site.
History
Course history
The land opened in 1991 as Stallion Mountain Country Club — a 54-hole Jim Colbert and Jeff Brauer complex that hosted the PGA Tour's Las Vegas Invitational and witnessed Chip Beck's historic 59 in October 1991, one of only a handful ever shot on Tour. The club later fell on hard times, and in 2004 Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley rebuilt it into the single championship 18 that plays today.
Design
Design philosophy
The Schmidt-Curley rebuild swapped the old club's scattered three-nine sprawl for one cohesive routing — generous off the tee, defended at the green by tiering and sand. It rewards a player who can shape an approach and read slope, without punishing the average handicap off the fairway.
The Round
Strategic layout
Water is in play on roughly a third of the holes, and the tiered greens make club selection on approach the round's real test. From the tips it's a full 7,351-yard, 134-slope examination; from the forward sets it stays honest and playable.
